Updates to the Site

This folks, is kind of important. We’ve moved!

From 1 September, we won’t be Edinburgh Wargames anymore. We’ll be Orkney WargamesThis change has been a long time in the offing – for a year and a half really, since I moved back to the islands. At the moment, it doesn’t matter which address you type in or have bookmarked – both “point” to each other, so you’ll reach us either way. However, on 1 September I’ll be closing down www.edinburghwargames.com, and just keeping www.orkneywargames.com going. So, to avoid being taken unawares, please bookmark the Orkney one. The content will stay the same – only the name will change.Just so you know, I plan to to sell the old domain name to the guys in my old Edinburgh club – the South East Scotland Wargames Club (SESWC). The price will be a bottle of gin. Then they can use it to publicise their own club’s activities. They’ll also spent a month or two mentioning the move themselves, so any stragglers can switch over to the Orkney site. For us, it’ll emphasise the historical games we play at the Orkney Wargames Club – or will do when it eventually reopens after the pandemic.  It meets in Kirkwall – the town pictured above – on Thursday evenings, from 6pm on. The actual venue is the St. Magnus Centre – a modern building tucked behind the 12th century St. Magnus Cathedral. You certainly can’t miss the cathedral…Here it is again, in all its sandstone glory. The Centre is on Palace Road, just past the ruins of the Bishop’s Palace and the Earl’s Palace. They’re pretty hard to miss too. Actually, Kirkwall (“the toon” to locals) is 18 miles from me, so I usually car pool with my chum Gyles. Do you see that causeway in the picture below? That’s Churchill Barrier No. 2, and we actually drive over that on the way in. It divides the former great naval anchorage of Scapa Flow from the wild and wooly North Sea. Now, remember – you have until 1 September 2020 to bookmark the new page – www.orkneywargames.com.

Incidentally, please ignore the google tabs that say “Site Unsecure” or such-like. That’s simply Google’s way of extorting more money from a website. At some point I’ll pay up and get the site authenticated as secure. It’s safe already – I just need Google’s costly stamp of approval. Right now though, the main thing is to bookmark the change!

Cool, the Orkneys look very idyllic at least in bright sunshine. Glad to see you are back blogging. I had almost given up after awhile checking on the old site, something I normally did 2-3 times a week until Covid of course.

Our own local group is playing again live and in person where I live but a couple of guys won’t show up until it is completely safe. I respect their choice but nothing is ever really safe.

    Oh love that causeway too!

Hey Joe! Glad to have you back – just in time for the switchover. While our club meets haven’t restarted, we’ve begun to run small games at home with a few other local players. Orkney is indeed lovely in the sunshine – but winter is coming, and with it the long nights. As for the Churchill Barriers, there are four of them in all, designed to keep prowling U-Boats at bay.

Well shippers, moving back to Orkney was inspired. I love it up here. The only drawback at the moment is that north of Berwick we have more a restrictive lockdown. We had a four player game at my house, and two weeks later, just before the next one, I couldn’t have any players visiting! Still, it all means I’m getting through my lead mountain. Its still huge though… Stay safe, and if you can’t, then don’t get caught.

    Hey Angus,
Just found your site. I’m moving to South Ronaldsay in about 2 weeks time. Just for the winter but I’m planning to stay. I’m mainly a board gamer but have done plenty of Wargaming in the past. When I’m settled and the pandemic has slowed down I’m definitely in to coming along one evening.
